Doug Farbrother has a wealth of experience making government work better. He helped transform the Education Department’s Student Loan Agency into a performance-based organization that boosted customer satisfaction scores up to equal those of private lenders, cut unit cost by nearly 20%, and, on Gallup’s employee satisfaction index, blew right past the private sector with the biggest improvement in employee satisfaction in Gallup history. He helped create a package of reinvention initiatives adopted by Iowa’s governor and legislature that produced better results for Iowans while solving a $100 million budget shortfall. At the invitation of Saudi Arabia, Doug conducted a series of reinvention lectures and seminars in Riyadh for top-level government administrators.
Doug was one of four government managers hand-picked to lead Vice President Al Gore's National Partnership for Reinventing Government. As senior manager and strategist, he organized the 1993 Reinvention Summit, bringing the nation's top corporate executives and management gurus together to advise Vice President Gore how to lead and transform large organizations. He created "reinvention labs," some 400 organizations where federal workers could innovate to serve their customers better and cheaper. Doug wrote most of the Vice President's speeches on reinvention and numerous publications, including ghostwriting Gore’s 1996 book, "The Best Kept Secrets in Government," published by Random House. He traveled nationally, speaking on behalf of the Vice President's reinvention campaign to audiences from both government and the private sector.
Doug spent decades as a federal senior executive in national defense. As Deputy Chief of Force Management, US Army, Europe, Doug led the team that introduced new troop units and equipment into the force, and helped plan and manage the deployment of military units to Desert Storm. As Director of Installations and Construction for the Defense Department, Doug led a worldwide turn-around in the quality of facilities and services for the troops, changing the standard from "minimum essential" to excellence. He and his team created business partnerships that attracted hundreds of millions of dollars of private investment into housing, childcare, and other services for the troops and their families.
Doug was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. He has a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from The Ohio State University. His first career was as a bebop saxophonist and his hobbies now include music composition, video production, cooking, and tennis.
