Contract Period: 1994
Summary of Engagement
PSG's Reinventing Government Network (RGN) was hired by the Amelior Foundation to consult with the Governor of New Jersey's Economic Master Plan Commission. The Commission had been charged by the Governor with developing an overall economic development strategy for New Jersey.
The Commission asked RGN to research and develop brief reports on "best practices" from other states (and nations), in policy areas targeted by the Commission task forces. The Commission was particularly interested in policies and initiatives consistent with the principles of reinventing government -- i.e., those that built working markets, put the private sector in the driver's seat, created accountability for results, and decentralized implementation. The Commission focused primarily on improving the state's ability to retain existing businesses; to grow new businesses; to attract businesses; to improve the health of New Jersey's city-state economies (i.e. the economies of metropolitan regions); and to help the poor gain access to the mainstream economies of those city-states.
